Hunter Mahan wins
the Travelers Championship in a playoff
First PGA Tour victory for
Hunter Mahan this Sunday after a playoff putt to win the
Travelers Championship.
In 2006 Hunter Mahan finished the Travelers Championship second,
but this year he finally claimed the trophy. Mahan and Jay
Williamson have been playing the cat-and-mouse game the entire
final day of the Travelers, and it was meant to end in a
playoff. A 2-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole did the
job and Mahan beat 40-year-old Williamson.
Hunter Mahan made a 7-foot birdie putt
on 18 to force the playoff, then hit his 134-yard approach on
the first playoff hole. Jay Williamson, who was atop of the
leaderboard entering the final round, was just seven feet away
after a 169-yard approach, but missed the putt.
Although Jay Williamson was hoping to
earn back his U.S. PGA Tour card with a win, second-place finish
will be enough to earn Williamson a trip to the Buick Open, next
week in Michigan.
Final top five at the 2007 Travelers
Championship leaderboard:
1 Hunter Mahan -15
2 Jay Williamson -15
3 Nick O'Hern -11
4 Vijay Singh -10
5 Fred Funk -9
