Roger Federer
opens the 2007 Wimbledon with a win
No surprises as the first
round of the 2007 Wimbledon started after a rain delay, and
Roger Federer wins his 1st match.
Federer
is another tennis player who will try to beat a record set by
the great Bjorn Borg. The Swiss won his first round at the 2007
Wimbledon against Teimuraz Gabashvili from Russia 6-3,
6-2, 6-4, after the only Grand Slam grass course was open for
business, following a delay due to rain.
If Roger Federer wins the Wimbledon he will match Borg's record
of five straight Wimbledon titles. If Rafael Nadal wins the
Grand Slam competition, he will match Bjorn's back to back wins
of both the French Open and Wimbledon.
The top seeded Roger Federer remains the
favorite to win the 2007 Wimbledon with odds by the U.K.
bookmaker
Bet365 at 1/3. Another British
bookmaker, Paddy Power, announced that they will be paying out
on Federer as the men’s winner, even though the final of the
men’s competition is not until Sunday week. According to the
bookmaker's spokesperson, almost all of the punters were betting
on Roger Federer, so the Irish-based sportsbook will pay out on
all bets struck on Federer before 11am on Monday, the 25th.
Andy Roddick also won his first match,
playing against fellow American Justin Gimelstob, 6-1, 7-5, 7-
3, to advance in the next stage of the 2007 Wimbledon. Andy
Roddick has odds on winning outright at 12/1.
At the women's Wimbledon, Martina Hingis
with odds of 50/1, took her first round playing against Naomi
Cavaday 6-7, 7-5, 6-0.
