The Iowa Straw Poll
results are finally out, the winner is Mitt Romney, Ron Paul
comes 5th as predicted by OGPaper.com
The Iowa Straw Poll was a very important test, mostly for
the second-tier Republicans. With tow of the leaders in the
race, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain not present at the Ames
Straw Poll, it was all about Mitt Romney.
And for many of the Republican
candidates it was a "make or break" situation, for example,
Tommy Thompson stated before the poll that if he does not come
out first or second - he will drop out of the race. The Iowa
Straw Poll would bring an end to the Presidential hopes of many
other GOP candidates. Meanwhile supporters of Ron Paul had
sought to block voting, arguing that vote-counting machines had
fundamental weaknesses, but a federal judge refused to grant an
injunction on Friday. The matter was appealed to the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the 8th Circuit, which on Saturday upheld the
ruling.
After a long delay, due to what was
reported to be a voting machine malfunction (what do you
know?!?), the Iowa Straw Poll results were announced here
are the numbers:
Mitt Romney - 31%
Mike Huckabee - 18.1%
Sen. Sam Brownback with 2192 votes and 15.3%
Tom Tancredo with 1961 votes, 13.7%
Ron Paul with 1305 votes, and 9.1%
Tommy Thompson, 1,009 votes, 7.3%
Fred Thomson with 231 votes
Rudy Giuliani with 183 votes
Duncan Hunter with 174 votes
John McCain with 101 votes
John Cox with 41 votes
