Xavier Mitchell
injured during Cal-Tennessee game
The Tennessee defensive end
Xavier Mitchell not seriously injured, says coach.
The
Tennessee left defensive end Xavier Mitchell was carried off the
field with an injury yesterday, during the final moments of the
college football game between Cal and Tennessee. He waived to
the fans while being carried away, a gesture met with clapping
for his efforts. At the time the type of injury to Xavier
Mitchell was unknown, but today the Vols' head coach said during
the Phillip Fulmer Show,
"That was a real concern, but he made
it back to the plane. They did a CT and an X-ray at the hospital
last night, and he has a concussion, quite likely, but there's
no damage to his spine or anything, which was the original
concern. We're very thankful for that."
This is a great news for the UT fans, after a scare that
the broken pinky finger on the throwing hand of Vols quarterback
Erik Ainge could be an issue. No.12 California put up 471 yards
in Week 1, as the Bears dropped the No.15 Tennessee Volunteers
45-31 at Memorial Stadium. Nathan Longshore went 19-for-28 for
240 yards and two touchdowns, and Justin Forsett ran for 160
yards and a major for the Bears. Erik Ainge was 32-for-47 for
270 yards and three touchdowns, while Lucas Taylor tallied 102
receiving yards for the Volunteers.
