Tim
Tebow, quarterback for the Florida Gators, won the 2007 Heisman
Trophy and became the first sophomore to win the prestigious
college football award. Tebow earned 1,957 points and 462
first-place votes last night. Nervous Tebow came on the stage
with a cast on his right hand to accept the award and gave an
emotional speech, saying “There are a lot of great freshmen
and sophomores out there, and I’m just glad that I get to be the
first one to win this.” And indeed some still question if a
sophomore should be able to receive the Heisman Trophy,
considering the short college football career. But with 20
passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns in a season, Tim
Tebow won the Heisman Trophy ahead of Arkansas running back
Darren McFadden, who got 1,703 points and 291 first-pace votes.
Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan came out third with 632 points
and Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel was fourth with 425
points.
Tim Tebow was the favorite to win the
Heisman Trophy ever since the finalists were announced. At the
online odds maker
Bodog Sports, the Florida
Gators quarterback was listed with odds on winning the award at
1/5. For comparison, Darren McFadden and Chase Daniel shared
odds on winning the Heisman Trophy of 3/1.
