Two Ontario casinos shut down due to labor strike

Two casinos in Ontario, Canada, shut down following a strike overnight by the Canadian Auto Workers union over an expired contract. OLG Casino Brantford in Brantford, Ontario, and Sudbury Downs Slots in Sudbury, both casinos operated by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, closed their doors on Sunday, after a collective agreement between the company and the union expired at midnight. The Canadian Auto Workers, which represents 700 of the Brantford facility's 1,000 employees and 80 in Sudbury said that both sides are "extremely far apart'' on wages, working conditions and benefits. OLG Casino Brantford said that it's looking forward to an agreement to be reached as soon as possible. Meanwhile, about 110 security employees at Woodbine Casino in Toronto also went on strike, but that casino remains open as managers replaced the striking security workers.
