2008 Wimbledon
Results: Venus Williams reaches final
Defending
champion Venus Williams ensured a spot on the 2008 Wimbledon
final, after beating Elena Dementieva 6-1, 7-6 (3) on Thursday.
Heavy favorite with the odds makers at
BodogSports (-350), Venus
Williams had little trouble against fifth-seeded Dementieva to
improve her record to 7-0 in semifinals at the All England Club.
Following her semi-final victory, Venus Williams is now the
favorite to win the 2008 Wimbledon with odds 5/4, followed by
sister Serena at 11/10, who is facing Chinese wild-card entrant
Zheng Jie. The suspense was extended today, after their match
was suspended by rain with Serena leading 5-2.
"I am dying for Serena to get
through. This is my seventh final here and I'm looking forward
to playing Serena in our third final, and I'm going to be
rooting her on. At this point, our main focus is obviously both
of us getting to the final. Then from there it's every Williams
for themselves," Venus said after securing a shot at her
seventh Grand Slam title. It would be the first all-Williams
final since 2003 when Serena beat Venus in the championship
match for the second year in a row.
