Jason Taylor
traded to the Washington Redskins
The
Miami Dolphins have agreed to trade defensive end Jason Taylor
to the Washington Redskins, it was announced today. Jason
Taylor, who was not happy camper at Miami to begin with, was
quickly traded today to the Redskins by the Dolphins in exchange
for a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round choice in
2010. The swift trade came just hours after the Washington
Redskins lost starting defensive end Phillip Daniels during
practice on Sunday, due to a season-ending left knee injury.
Less than two hours before the trade,
Washington executive vice president Vinny Cerrato said that the
team is yet to talk to anyone about a possible replacement, but
was later quoted, while announcing the deal: "We're fortunate
there was a guy that caliber on the market when somebody got
hurt. Normally, in most years, there's not a guy of that caliber
on the market. His play speaks for itself. I think it's easy to
talk about Jason Taylor. He's got statistics and everything else
to back up everything that he's done. So we had to act after
losing our starting defensive end Phillip Daniels, and talked to
Parcells after practice today and we were able to work something
out."
According to experts, the Dolphins were
more than happy to trade Taylor. The six-time Pro Bowl defensive
end fell out of favor with coach Bill Parcel, after spending his
offseason on the TV show "Dancing with the Stars" rather than
working out with teammates. Not surprisingly, Taylor, after
starting every game each of the past eight years with the
Dolphins, had said that he would likely spend one more year on
the field and then seek a career in Hollywood, despite the fact
that he has two years left on his contract. "I'm 100 percent
positive he'll play longer than one year," Vinny Cerrato
said today and Taylor's agent also confirmed that it's possible
the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year will play beyond this
season.
There were no comments coming out of
Miami, despite the announcement made by the Redskins. "Right
now we're not prepared to confirm that," was all Dolphins
spokesman Harvey Greene said.
Jason Taylor was drafted from Akron by
the Miami Dolphins in the third round, 73rd overall, in 1997 and
remained with the team throughout his entire professional
career. In addition to the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the
Year, he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2007.
Taylor finished the last season with 662 tackles, 117 sacks, 41
forced fumbles and 7 interceptions.
