Judge gives 15
months to gambling NBA ref
US
District Court Judge Carol Amon handed down a 15-month sentence
to the infamous NBA gambling referee Tim Donaghy. The ref was
found guilty of betting on NBA games he officiated, as well as
providing his gambling accomplices with sensitive game
information. "I brought shame on myself and my family,"
Donaghy said after he was sentenced to 15 months behind bars,
including three months probation.
Tim Donaghy's two gambling buddies,
James Battista and Thomas Martino, were sentenced to 15 and 12
months respectively earlier this month. Donaghy began betting on
NBA games in 2003 and began passing on inside information in
2006 to Battista and Martino, both former high-school classmates
of the NBA referee. Tim Donaghy was facing a maximum sentence of
33 months for betting on the games he officiated and passing the
information to his gambling accomplices.
