Bwin loses Germany
online gambling case, betting continues
Online gambling company Bwin has lost the case with German
state North-Rhine Westfalia, but will continue offering betting
services to its residents, it was announced today. In the
aftermath of Germany's crackdown on online betting, the online
gambling firm Bwin filed a case with local courts, requesting
North-Rhine Westfalia to suspend the execution of an online
betting ban in the state, pending a Federal Court ruling on the
issue. The court, however, rejected the suspension request on
Thursday, it was reported.
The state's lottery, Westlotto, which is the online
gambling monopoly in North-Rhine Westfalia, said that the sports
betting website faces fines if continues to operate in the
state. Representatives of Bwin, however, said that the online
gambling company would continue to offer its betting and
gambling services, despite the ruling, adding that Germany's ban
on online gambling violated European Union rules and it will
continue to challenge it in courts. After the ruling shares of
Bwin (BWIN.VI) fell by as much as 7%.
