NASCAR: Jeff Gordon wins the Dodge Avenger 500 at
Darlington
Jeff Gordon continues to hold his leader
position in the NASCAR standings after winning the Dodge Avenger
500 yesterday at Darlington.
Gordon is so far the leader with 1881 points
followed by Jimmie Johnson who is 231 points behind. Jeff Gordon
took a gamble at Darlington and won thanks to a few late
cautions, after his water temperature went through the roof. But
the gamble paid off, despite finishing in a cloud of steam due
to overheating, and he managed to lead the last 22 laps, which
were his only leading laps for the race in South Carolina. Some
believe that it was a pure luck that the engine held on to the
finish, giving Gordon his third victory for the year. Gordon had
the favorite 7/2 betting odds to win the Darlington race, the
same as Jimmie Johnson.
Chevrolet dominated, and completed a sweep of
the top-three positions with Gordon, Hamlin and Johnson at the
Darlington Raceway.
The race was previously postponed for Sunday,
due to rain at Darlington, SC. Next NASCAR race, Nextel Open, is
on the 19th at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. Odds for
the next race have not been published yet.
