Sammy Sosa hits
his 600th home run against the Cubs
Playing against the Chicago
Cubs, Sammy Sosa became the fifth member of the 600-homer club
on Wednesday.
The
only difference this time - Sammy Sosa was on the other side.
Playing for the Texas Rangers following a year out of baseball,
Sosa hit a 1-2 pitch into his team's bullpen in right-center for
a solo homer to joint the elite baseball club. Sammy Sosa played
for the Chicago Cubs from 1992-2004 and got 545 of his home runs
with the Cubs, which he has never faced before the series opener
Tuesday night.
A countdown banner that has hung in right field for about
a month was flipped from 599 to 600 and a new banner was
unfurled in center field congratulating Sosa for joining the
600-homer club.
He was mobbed at home plate by his teammates while the
scoreboard showed pictures of all five members of Sosa's new
club: Hank Aaron (755 homers), Barry Bonds (748), Babe Ruth
(714), Willie Mays (660) and Sammy Sosa (600). The cheering
hadn't even subsided before Frank Catalanotto followed with a
homer -- the 75th of his career, to give the Rangers a 6-1 lead.
