Mexico beats
Brazil 2-0 at Copa America
Surprising results continue
to happen at the Copa America, this time Mexico won against
Brazil 2-0.
Three
days after losing to the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup
final, in their Copa America group opener, Mexico squeezed a
victory out of the world champion Brazil. This is the second
straight time Mexico has beaten the five-time world champion at
major soccer tournaments (Mexico defeated Brazil 1-0 in the
first round of the 2005 Confederations Cup).
Brazil, the defending champion of the Copa America, played
poorly in the first half and suffered two goals in the space of
five minutes. Nery Castillo scored on a solo effort in the 23rd
minute when he took a pass from Juan Carlos Cacho and Ramon
Morales doubled the lead with a 25-yard free kick in the 29th
that froze Doni so much that the goalkeeper didn't even attempt
to stop it.
Attacks followed towards the Mexico's
goal, but the performance of the goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa
prevented Brazil from scoring even once. The Brazil coach Dunga
commented after the game: "We've beaten them several times, but
we knew going in it was a risky rival that has improved a great
deal. The last 35 minutes we dominated the ball in the
opponent's area, but the goals didn't come. Sunday’s match will
be decisive. Now there’s nothing else left, we have to beat
Chile”
