Fed Cup: Venus
Williams to play Nadia Petrova
The semi-finals of the
Fed Cup will match United States and Russia, Venus Williams will
play Nadia Petrova.
The
2007 Wimbledon Champ Venus Williams will play Russian Nadia
Petrova in the semi-finals at the Fed Cup singles. Before that,
Vania King will play Anna Chakvetadze in the Saturday opener. On
Sunday, Venus will play Chakvetadze and Kind will match Petrova.
Following those games, Vania King and Lisa
Raymond play Nadia Petrova and Elena Vesnina in doubles to wrap
up the best-of-five event.
Williams said that she is well rested after
the Wimbledon and will be ready for the Fed Cup. "I thought
actually it would be great for me to come here because I knew,
even before I got here, it would be really relaxing, that this
is not a big city, but this is a place where I could relax," the
2007 Wimbledon winner commented.
A player from each side have already withdrawn
from the Fed Cup. Serena Williams withdrew after injuring her
left thumb and calf at the Wimbledon. From the Russian team
absent will be No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova, who pulled out with
a right shoulder injury after losing to Williams at the All
England Club.
Russian Captain Shamil Tarpischev, whose visa
was delayed, finally got the papers and will join the Russian
team.
All punters can hope for is a break from the
rainy weather in Vermont.
