FIFA to safeguard
football betting at the World Cup
FIFA announced on Thursday
that it will set up own committee to watch for football betting
and match fixing at the 2010 World Cup.
Possible
betting scams and match-fixing will be closely monitored by a
company created by FIFA in time for the 2010 World Cup in South
Africa. According to a statement by the world football
regulator, it will extend its monitoring of sports betting
activities to include the 2010 World Cup. The company set up by
FIFA is called "Early Warning System" and its based in Zurich.
The official statement read that the
company's sole purpose is "to prevent sports betting from
having any negative impact on football matches and, at the same
time, raise awareness of this problem throughout the entire
football community."
The FIFA Code of Ethics already forbids
all officials, players and their agents from betting on football
games.
