Alex Rodriguez
(A-Rod) a free agent
Sports Illustrated reports
that Alex Rodriguez is opting out of future contract with the
Yankees.
According
to Sports Illustrated, Alex Rodriguez, a.k.a. A-Rod, will not be
playing for the Yankees. His agent Scott Boras has told the
sports magazine that A-Rod will be opting out of his $252
million contract and will become a free agent. Boras also claims
that they have notified the Yankees in writing and on the phone.
The Yankees say they are unaware of the decision, but if
Rodriguez decides to be a free agent, the club will not chase
after him. Al-Rod told his agent that he wasn't given nearly
enough time to make a decision (10 days after the World Series),
especially with the uncertainty surrounding Andy Pettitte, Jorge
Posada and Mariano Rivera.
Alex Rodriguez was traded in 2004 from the Texas
Rangers to the New York Yankees and as part of the trade, the
Rangers agreed to pay $67 million of the $179 million left
on A-Rod's contract. If Rodriguez opts out, the Rangers would
still have to pay the Yankees $30 million. The $252 million
record-breaking contract was signed with the Rangers in 2000 for
10 years, 2007 being the year A-Rod could opt out and become a
free agent.
