Donda West, mother and manager of rap star Kanye West, has passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles.

Spokesman for Kanye West confirmed the dead of his mother, but the cause has not been released. "The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief," the spokesman said.

Donda West was also the manager of the rap star and a chairwoman of the Kanye West Foundation, which works to help decrease the rate of illiteracy and school dropouts. Mrs. West was former professor and chairwoman of the Chicago State University's English department. She released a book earlier this year, detailing Kanye West's childhood in Chicago and raising Kanye alone, after her husband left when Kanye was only 3 years old.
