LSU grants
Michigan permission to talk to Les Miles
The Michigan Wolverines were
granted permission to meet with LSU coach Les Miles re: coaching
job.
According to LSU spokesman, the Michigan Wolverines had asked
and were given permission to approach head coach Les Miles for
the football coaching vacancy in Ann Arbor. LSU athletic
director Skip Bertman granted the request on condition that
Michigan representatives wait until after Saturday's
Southeastern Conference championship before the negotiations
begin. LSU sis not comment on the extend they are willing to
offer to Les Miles in order to compete with Michigan for the
coach. "We're trying to get the SEC championship game behind
us that's why we're scheduling these things for next week. We're
just looking forward to the game Saturday and that's the focus
of the entire program right now, Saturday's game against
Tennessee," said LSU spokesman Herb Vincent.
The move by Michigan to snatch Les Miles
has been long expected. Miles, who has been with LSU for three
seasons, had a special clause in his contract which would make
him pay $1.25 million if he leaves LSU to take job with the
Wolverines. Michigan is the only school mentioned in that
clause. This number, however, would hardly stop Michigan
football from taking Miles to Ann Arbor. Michigan athletic
director Bill Martin had already said that the school could
offer the next candidate $3 million per year or twice as much as
Lloyd Carr's salary with the Wolverines.
