Baltimore Ravens
fire coach Brian Billick after nine years
Baltimore Ravens fired on
Monday long-time head coach Brian Billick, following a
disappointing season.
The
Baltimore Ravens (5-11) fired on Monday head coach Brian Billick,
who was on the job for nine years. Billick started at Baltimore
in 1999 and took the Ravens to win the Super Bowl in 2001, as
well as leading the team to a franchise-best 13-3 record in
2006. But all his accomplishments did little to prevent him from
getting hired just a day after his team concluded a
disappointing season, during which they lost a team-record nine
consecutive games, prior to the 27-21 victory over the Steelers
in the final regular season game.
Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti
assured Brian Billick less than a month ago that his job in 2008
with the team was secured. "I just changed my mind. I can't
explain to you how tough a decision it is. It's the toughest
decision I've ever had to make," Steve Bisciotti told the
Baltimore Sun after firing Billick on Monday. Bisciotti also
said that he simply gave indications to Brian Billick that he
may keep the job, but never made any promises to the coach. The
Ravens will pay Billick the remainder of his contract, which has
been estimated at $5 million for the next three years.
