2008 Stanley Cup
finals - odds favor Red Wings against Penguins
It's
finally the time hockey fans have been waiting for all season,
the 2008 Stanley Cup finals, and the odds are currently favoring
the Detroit Red Wings over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Starting
with the first game of the Stanley Cup best-of-seven series,
tonight at 8:00pm EST the Pittsburgh Penguins (47-27-8) will
visit the Detroit Red Wings (54-21-7) in a game which sees the
Penguins as big underdog. At the online sportsbook
BodogLife the odds favor the
Red Wings at -170 to win the first game, while Pittsburgh is
+150, with the total expected sitting at 5.5. Keep in mind that
Pittsburgh is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games on the road, but just
1-5 SU in its last 6 games when playing the Red Wings. Meanwhile
Detroit is 10-1 SU in its last 11 games at home with the total
has gone OVER in 6 of Detroit's last 8 games when playing
Pittsburgh. For the Penguins only Mark Eaton is out indefinitely
with a knee injury, while the Red Wings will play without Johan
Franzen and Tomas Kopecky, both out for the Stanley Cup finals
with injuries.
The Detroit Red Wings certainly have
what it takes statistically to win the 2008 Stanley Cup. Detroit
is third highest scoring team in the league at 3.1 goals per
game, leads the league in shots with 34.4 per game and is second
in the league in power play chances at 4.7 per game. This,
combined with the fact that the Red Wings are the toughest team
to score on in the league, allowing just 2.2 goals per game and
have the best shots against in the league allowing 23.5 per
game, and there is no surprise that Detroit is the favorite to
win the Stanley Cup this year.
Looking at the big picture, the Detroit
Red Wings are favorite to outright win the 2008 Stanley Cup at
BodogLife, as well. Detroit is
-160 to be the new NHL Champion, while the Pittsburgh Penguins
are +140 underdog. According to the odds makers, the 4-3 series
victory for Detroit is the most likely outcome of the 2008
Stanley Cup finals with odds 7/2. Pittsburgh Penguins wining the
Stanley Cup 4-2 is the second likely outcome of the finals
series with odds 37/10, followed by Detroit Red Wings winning
4-2 or 4-1, both results with odds to happen at 4/1.
