David Beckham to
captain England against Trinidad and Tobago
Fabio
Capello has given midfielder David Beckham the captain's armband
for England's friendly against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in
Port of Spain. The 33-year-old player, who won his 101st cap on
Wednesday, resigned as captain following the 2006 World Cup
finals in Germany and spread doubts about his future with the
English squad. But on Sunday, Beckham will be one of the few
veterans traveling to Port of Spain to face Trinidad and Tobago
for the friendly. England manager Fabio Capello will give the
young players a chance to prove themselves during the friendly,
leaving behind stars John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Joe
Cole, Wayne Rooney, Owen Hargreaves and Wes Brown. United
defender Rio Ferdinand was first pointed as the possible captain
for England in the game against Trinidad and Tobago, but it was
given to David Beckham, a move some see as a means of winning
favour with FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, who holds an
important vote in the process of England's 2018 World Cup bid.
Naturally England is the favourite to win the game with odds
1.33 at the British online bookmaker
Bet 365, while Trinidad and
Tobago will pay out on 8.50 odds if victorious.
