2008 US Open: Odds
favor Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson
Tiger
Woods and Phil Mickelson will be the two top golfers to watch at
the Torrey Pines - they are the odds favorites for the 2008 US
Open. This shouldn't surprise anyone - Tiger Woods and Phil
Mickelson are the top two golf players in the world and it's the
expected result from the odds makers. At the online sportsbook
BodogSports Tiger Woods is the
ultimate favorite with odds to win the 2008 U.S. Open at short
5/2, followed by Phil Mickelson with odds 7/1 to win the golf
tournament. Every other golfer following the two is listed with
double digit odds, starting at 18/1 on Sergio Garcia and 22/1 on
Padraig Harrington. The fact that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson
are such big favorites against the rest of the pack could only
prove beneficial for the bettors of this year's U.S. Open,
considering the long odds held by all players. Follow along:
Tiger Woods is the world's No.1 for a
reason, but he had failed to deliver an U.S. Open victory since
2002, his second U.S. Open tournament win, the first one in
2000. Five years in a row Tiger Woods enter the U.S. Open as the
top favorite to win and five years underdogs has snatched the
victory away from Woods. The No.1 in golf also underwent an
arthroscopic surgery on his left knee April 15th and the 2008
U.S. Open will be the first tournament Tiger Woods will be
entering since. Is he fully recovered? Will he end the 5-year
long dry spell at the U.S. Open tournament this year? The
bookmakers say yes and back him up with 5/2 odds, but
considering the last time he competed, he paid on even odds -
obviously even the bookies have their reservations.
How about Phil Mickelson - at
BodogSports the No.2 in the
world is listed with odds 7/1 to win the 2008 U.S. Open, the
only serious competition to Tiger Woods, but is he really? Phil
Mickelson, although a great golfer, has never won an U.S. Open
in his career. In 2006 he was very close to winning his first
American trophy, but fell a shot short of the winner Geoff
Ogilvy. And in last year's Open he failed to make the cut. The
victory a few weeks ago at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at
Colonial is likely the only reason Mickelson is the runner-up to
Woods on the 2008 U.S. Open betting odds sheets.
Still, both Tiger Woods and Phil
Mickelson seem to have the best chances of winning the 2008 U.S.
Open, at least the betting odds say so. But our suggestion to
all golf bettors - you may want to consider a side-bet on the
rest of the players. With double to triple digit odds, another
underdog winner could turn out to be this week's lucky numbers.
