2008 Wimbledon
Final: Venus v Serena set for Saturday
Serena
Williams met little resistance during her Wimbledon semi-final
game against Zheng Zie to set up the scene for third family
final against sister Venus. Despite the rain delay, Serena
Williams beat Zheng in an entertaining encounter 6-2, 7-6 on
Centre Court and will meet sister Venus, who secured final spot
after beating Elena Dementieva 6-1, 7-6 (3). "She pushed me
and really played a great match. She played like she had nothing
to lose. I was able to hit a smash on that set point. I didn’t
really want to go into a third set. I’m looking forward to
playing Venus in the final. She’ll be the toughest opponent I
have faced," said Serena after the semi-final was over. The
Williams sisters have met the total of 15 times in the past.
Serena currently leads the series 8-7 but has emerged the winner
on five of the six occasions the pair have met in Grand Slam
finals, including the 2002 and 2003 finals at Wimbledon. The
2008 Wimbledon final is the third time Venus faces Serena at the
oldest tennis championship in the world.
