Gambling
regulators to visit Soboba Casino next week
Federal gambling regulators will inspect the Soboba Casino
in California next week, following growing tensions between the
local police and the tribe. Representatives of the National
Indian Gaming Commission will meet with casino officials next
week, Robert Salgado, chairman of the Soboba Band of Luiseño
Indians, confirmed. According to Salgado, the gambling
regulators are visiting on a request he made earlier this summer
in the wake of the shootings of three tribal members by the
local police. Earlier this month Riverside County Sheriff
Stanley Sniff asked the federal government to shut down the
casino, claiming that gamblers, employees and tribal members are
in danger because of the tribe's policy. The National Indian
Gaming Commission is the governing body which has the power to
shut down the casino, if needed. To read more about the dispute
