Detroit's MGM
Grand casino laying off workers, again
The fact that the casino gambling business has been hurt
by the recent economic situation just as much as any other
industry was illustrated by the second round of layoffs at the
MGM Grand Detroit casino complex this weekend. According to
reports from the local press, the casino is laying off less than
100 workers in the gambling complex, the second time the casino
has resorted to letting people go this year, the first round
taking place in April. The recent round of layoffs will affect
workers at the restaurants and bars, not on the gambling floor,
it was announced. Casino management is also considering
downgrading some full-time employees to part-time. MGM Grand's
casino revenue in August was $50 million, up from $42.7 million
the same month last year.
