The excitement in the match started early, first with a goal by Darren Moore for Derby in the third minute. It took Southampton less than two minutes to bring the tension back to maximum level. Jhon Viafara scored an equalizer for Southampton in the fourth minute of the game. A few dangerous attacks followed from each side, but the first half finished 1-1, very clean, with no bookings on either team.
