Indy 500 checkers
- Franchitti wins the race
Dario Franchitti won the Indy-500 in a race
disturbed by lots of rain and many yellow flags.
The
race was interrupted by rain for three hours and then, after a
restart, was stopped after 166 of the scheduled 200 laps.
Franchitti was given the odds to win the
Indianapolis 500 of 10/1 according to
Bodog Sports, an online
bookmaker. He is racing for Andretti Green Racing drivers, and
won the Indy 500 with pit strategy, rather than fast driving.
Kanaan appeared to have the race in his hands when rain poured
down the first time on lap 112, just four laps after he took the
lead with a pass on Andretti. Andretti's car had an accident
shortly after and flipped over, but the driver was able to climb
out uninjured.
This is the first win for Franchitti this
year. In 2007 he had taken three top-5s and four top-10s, with
total earnings before the Indy 500 of a little over $315,000.
