Wimbledon Women:
Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova advance
Both Venus Williams and Maria
Sharapova advance to second round at the 2007 Wimbledon.
Three-time
champion Venus Williams almost became the surprise at the first
round of the 2007 Wimbledon, against the Russian teenager Alla
Kudryavtseva, who was playing her first match at Wimbledon. The
19-year-old Kudryavtseva won the first set, but Venus quickly
regained, to win 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 and advance to the second round.
Venus Williams will face Hana Sromova of the Czech Republic
next.
The second seeded Maria Sharapova also
met some resistance at the first round. Sharapova won against
Yung-Jan Chan of Taipei 6-1, 7-5.
At the second round of the Women's
Wimbledon tomorrow, the bookmakers' favorite Justine Henin will
play Vera Douchevina and Martina Hingis will meet Aiko Makamura.
Other officially posted Wimbledon
matches on Wednesday:
Roberta Vinci vs. Patty Schnyder
Alicia Molik vs. Serena Williams
Kaia Kanepi vs. Shahar Peer
