R. Kelly child
pornography trial set for September
The R&B singer R. Kelly will
go to trial on child pornography charges in September.
One of the most famous R&B singers, Robert Sylvester Kelly
known around the world as "R. Kelly" will stand trial beginning
on September 17th, facing child pornography charges. The
40-year-old singer is accused of videotaping himself having sex
with an underage girl, who could have been as young as 13 at the
time the video was made. R. Kelly pleaded not guilty to the
charges, while his defence have disputed the age of the girl and
if it is R. Kelly on the tape.
His trial was delayed after arguments over
when the video was made, which would help establish the age of
the girl in the sex tape at the time of the act. Kelly's trial
had to be re-scheduled again, after the judge overseeing the
trial fell and injured himself, needing time to recuperate.
The troubles for R. Kelly started on June
6th of 2002, when the singer was indicted on 21 counts of having
sexual intercourse with a minor, stemming from a video tape
allegedly showing R. Kelly having sex with what is believed to
be a 13 year old girl. The charges were later reduced to 14
counts of soliciting a minor for child pornography.
This is not the first time R. Kelly is
accused of sexual relations with a minor. As far back as 1991
several women have claimed to have had sex with him. In 1995
VIBE Magazine found and published a copy of the marriage license
of R. Kelly and the singer Aaliyah, who was 15 years old at the
time, and her age was falsely listed as 18. A few months later
the marriage was annulled.
