2007 Breeders
Cup: Lawyer Ron favorite, Curlin and Street Sense odds
One day left until the 2007
Breeders Cup Classic starts, Lawyer Ron takes the lead by odds,
followed by Curlin and Street Sense.
With
one day left until the start of the 2007 Breeders Cup and
in the Classic race "Lawyer Ron" is taking the lead at the
racebooks. At
Bodog Racing, just couple of
days ago Lawyer Ron and Curlin shared odds of 3/1, but
today the betting odds on Lawyer Ron to win the 2007 Breeders
Cup Classic have been upgraded to 5/2, making him the favorite.
Lawyer Ron broke his maiden in October of 2005 at Keeneland, it
was his first dirt track race and he won by by 3 and 1/2
lengths. In January of last year Lawyer Ron won the Risen Star
Stakes at Louisiana Downs and in the following month he won the
Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, beating Steppenwolfer by 3/4
of a length.
The 2006 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in
March of 2006 is another victory to be added to Lawyer Ron's
list, although he was fifth down the backstretch, he took the
lead coming out of the second turn to win the race by 3 lengths.
Last year Lawyer Ron also won the Arkansas Derby and the St.
Louis Derby, but finished 9th at the Breeder's Cup Classic. In
2007 Lawyer Ron won the Oaklawn Handicap, the Whitney Stakes and
the Woodward Stakes (all one and one-eighth miles) and finished
second at Belmont Park's one and one-quarter miles Jockey Club
Gold Cup, where he was beaten by Curlin. trainer of Lawyer Ron
is Todd Pletcher.
Curlin with jockey Robby Albarado
remains listed with odds 3/1 at
Bodog Racing. Curlin became
well known during the 2007 Tripple Crown chase, which we covered
here extensively. He broke his maiden in February of 2007 at
Gulfstream Park, a seven-furlong maiden race for
three-year-olds, which Curlin won by 12 and 3/4 lengths. He was
the favorite at the 2007 Kentucky Derby, but placed 3rd behind
Street Sense and Hard Spun, however Curlin got his revenge at
the Preakness Stakes winning the race and beating Street Sense
by a neck. He was also favorite to win the Belmont Stakes, but
lost by a neck to Rags to Riches. In August Curlin lost the
Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park to Any Given Sunday and
Hard Spun. He qualified for the 2007 Breeders Cup by winning the
Jockey Club Gold Cup and beating Lawyer Ron. Trainer of Curlin
is Steve Asmussen.
Another well known contender, Street
Sense, saw a boost in the odds from 7/2 to 3/1 to win the
2007 Breeders Cup. He was probably the most underrated contender
during the week, as far as betting odds to win the Breeders Cup.
Street Sense won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last year and in
2007 he won the Tampa Bay Derby, the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2
lengths, Jim Dandy Stakes, as well as the Travers Stakes, making
Street Sense the first horse since 1995 to win both the Kentucky
Derby and the Travelers. After finishing second at the Preakness
Stakes, the then owner James Tafel decided not to race him in
the Belmont Stakes. In the 2007 Breeders Cup jockey will be
Calvin Borel, trainer of Street Sense is Carl Nafzger.
